Memorial Day weekend means the beginning of summer for most of us.  It’s also when we remember our family members past, and in a special way, we honor those who have served our country in uniform.

This year, I hope you will join me in another tradition, which we started in 2007, NEIGHBORS DAY.

It’s an idea that I saw working in Europe where-during the last week of May - residents throughout England, France, Germany, and other countries host NEIGHBORS DAY, bringing them closer together and promoting peaceful living.

We are constantly reminded how small our world is.  Television pictures fly around the globe instantly. We can know more about what’s happening thousands of miles away than we know about what’s happening on our own street.

NEIGHBORS DAY will help all of us create a real sense of community and make our neighborhoods safer.  I hope you will join us.

DONALD L. PLUSQUELLIC
MAYOR

Neighbors Day Akron is a simple concept. Know your neighbors, and safer neighborhoods will follow.

Akron residents are being asked to take a few hours on Saturday, May 23 to be a part of Neighbors Day Akron.

Our theme is "Living Together Better."

Your participation can be as easy as meeting a neighbor on the patio or porch for coffee or it can be something you and several neighbors take more time planning.

It’s no surprise that kids who are more connected to their community are more likely to experience a greater motivation to learn, be more empowered in the classroom, and active in extracurricular activities. Our children deserve it.

Neighbors Day is helping us create a safer, more closely knit community, and a healthier environment for children to live and learn.

If you’re old enough to recall when most children in a neighborhood attended the same school, you’ll also remember the endless hours we spent together creating our own games and activities.

Use some of that creative spirit on Neighbors Day Akron, "Living Together Better" and encourage your children to do the same.

If the spirit of Neighbors Day Akron becomes commonplace throughout our community, some day we won’t have to create a special day for something that may once again come naturally to us all.
